Why visit long-established wagashi shops

Wagashi is not just dessert, it follows the calendar. Kyoto shops often have decades or centuries of history and rotate limited editions every month, adjusting bean paste, mochi and chestnut to the season. Going to a specialist shop means tasting the season and the craft, something mass-produced sweets cannot match.

Early autumn eases out the summer chilled items and brings in fall lines. Expect imo yokan (sweet potato jelly), kuri kinton (chestnut paste), fruit daifuku with grape or pear, and raw sweets topped with sesame and black beans. Check the day's limited item first, then decide boxed or single. Nama-gashi is short-lived, eat the same day; for gifts pick yokan or monaka that keep three to five days. Prices run from about 300 yen a piece to a few thousand for a box, ask before buying.
