How to spend a day in kimono for autumn leaves: Higashiyama maple route
One-day Higashiyama plan in kimono: empty Kiyomizu at 6am, famous spots by day, illuminated maple at night. 2026 peak is late Nov to early Dec; the foliage front publishes in September, confirm official dates.
Where the leaves are right now
It is mid-to-late October, and most maple trees in central Kyoto are still green; the koyo front has only begun in the northern hills around Kibune, Kurama and Takao (Jingo-ji). If you want to wear kimono and photograph autumn leaves in Kyoto, the safest window is late November to early December, when city temples such as Tofuku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera and Kodaiji peak together. This article lays out a one-day Higashiyama route of "empty temple at dawn, famous spots by day, illuminated maple at night" that works perfectly in kimono.
When the leaves turn this year (front timeline)
Kyoto's color moves from north to south and from the hills down to the city; early and late spots can differ by two weeks:
- Late Oct to early Nov: Kibune, Kurama and Takao (Jingo-ji) at higher elevation turn first; the city stays green.
- Mid to late Nov: Eikan-do, Kitano Tenmangu and Arashiyama reach peak.
- Late Nov to early Dec: Tofuku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera and Kodaiji are in full color, the densest window in the city.
- Note: the 2026 foliage front is usually published in September and peak dates follow each shrine's official announcement. This year runs slightly late; some forecasts push Kyoto's peak into early December, so re-check the latest color report before you go.
A one-day Higashiyama route: dawn temple to night maple
- 06:00 Arrive at the shop and get dressed. Most kimono shops near Kiyomizu open after 8:30; leaving early lets you catch soft morning light with almost no one at Kiyomizu-dera and Ninen-zaka.
- 06:30 to 08:00 Kiyomizu-dera at dawn: view Higashiyama from the wooden stage while it is quiet and the light is flat.
- Morning: stroll and shoot in Ninen-zaka, Sannen-zaka, Yasaka Pagoda and Gion in kimono, with wooden machiya as backdrop.
- Midday to afternoon: move to Eikan-do, Nanzen-ji (with the Philosopher's Path) or Kodaiji for garden maples and water reflections.
- Evening to night: stay east for illuminated maple, Kodaiji (light-up 10/23 to 12/13), Kiyomizu-dera special night opening (11/21 to 11/30), Eikan-do night maple (11/20 to 12/6).
Three shooting windows in kimono
- Dawn soft light: no backlight, no harsh sun, fewest people; best for the stage and stone steps.
- Afternoon front light: saturated maple color, great for gardens and reflections.
- Night illumination: maple plus light layers; night maple is unique to Kyoto.
How to make the day easy
- Dress early to skip queues and front-load the highlights.
- Store large luggage first; don't drag it up stone steps and narrow paths.
- Prefer train or subway within a district; city buses jam in peak season.
- Keep night maple in the same district as your day plan, Kiyomizu with Kodaiji, Philosopher's Path with Eikan-do.
