How to choose Kyoto autumn foliage spots? Tofukuji, Eikando, Arashiyama, Takao, Kiyomizu compared
Kyoto 2026 foliage is late from a warm autumn, peaking around December 11 in the city. Tofukuji, Eikando, Arashiyama, Takao and Kiyomizu each suit different shots; time late November to early December and pair kimono with dawn-and-night maple photos.
When do Kyoto maples actually change color (2026 update)
Because of a warm autumn in 2026, Kyoto's fall color is running slightly later than usual. The Japan Meteorological Corporation published its first forecast on September 2: peak color in central Kyoto is expected around December 11, with yellow leaves around November 27. Mountain areas like Kibune, Kurama and Takao turn first, then the city temples follow. Late October to mid-November is the early stage; late November to early December is the true peak.
The official koyo forecast is usually released around September each year. Always check the live "koyo forecast" about two weeks before your trip, because temperature, day-night swings and wind can shift the peak by roughly a week.
What each of the five famous spots is best for
Tofukuji is famous for the bird's-eye view of the maple sea from Tsuten-kyo bridge, the most classic overhead foliage scene in Kyoto, but it gets extremely crowded at peak, so arrive before opening or on a weekday. Eikan-do, called "Momiji no Eikando," pairs pond reflections with corridors; its 2026 night light-up runs November 20 to December 6. Arashiyama has the widest range, bamboo grove plus Togetsukyo Bridge plus temple gardens, and colors earlier than the city center. Takao (Jingo-ji, Kojo-ji, Kozan-ji) is a hidden foliage belt north of the city for those avoiding crowds. Kiyomizu-dera is one of Higashiyama's most popular night-maple spots, with special evening viewing November 21 to 30 in 2026.
How to sequence them to avoid crowds
For full peak color target late November to early December; if you hate crowds, pick early December or a weekday at dawn. Mountain areas can be scheduled two weeks earlier. Chain nearby spots into one route to save travel time, for example Higashiyama line with Kiyomizu, Kodai-ji and Yasaka, Arashiyama line with Togetsukyo, Tenryu-ji and the bamboo grove.
The smoothest way to do kimono plus maple photos
In foliage season, catching both an empty temple at dawn and the lit night maples takes timing. Kyo Mirai Kimono (Kiyomizu-dera) is one of the few shops near Kiyomizu that opens earliest, from 6:00, with dressing done by 6:30, so you can shoot the clean Kiyomizu stage and Ninen-zaka before the crowds, then move to Arashiyama or Tofukuji in the afternoon. Late return is also available, so you don't have to rush back at noon and can keep wearing the kimono for evening and night maple shots, making the whole day more relaxed.

Practical foliage-season notes
Night light-ups usually need a separate ticket and popular temples queue at dawn; Japan's three-day weekend November 21 to 23 is the busiest of the season, so prefer weekdays. Wooden geta slip on leaf-covered stone paths, bring a jacket, and late November temperatures run about 5 to 12 degrees Celsius.
